Lake Initiatives
The Athabasca Watershed Council acknowledges the efforts of lake stewardship groups working in the Athabasca River Watershed. These groups are leaders in their communities, make positive changes, promote knowledge, and implement best management practices around their lakes. In turn, water quality, fish habitat, riparian zones and wetlands are improving in these watersheds.
In the Athabasca Watershed, there are approximately 881 permanent lakes and reservoirs. Some of the largest lakes in Alberta are located within the Athabasca Watershed as well; Lake Athabasca is the largest lake in Alberta with an area of 7,770 km². Lesser Slave Lake is the 3rd largest lake in Alberta (1,160 km²), Lac La Biche is the 7th largest (234 km²), and Calling Lake is the 9th largest (138 km²).
