Seasonal Watershed Education & Outreach Coordinator
The Athabasca Watershed Council is seeking a Seasonal Watershed Education & Outreach Coordinator to assist with our Watershed Education & Outreach Program.
The Organization: The Athabasca Watershed Council (AWC) is a registered charity formed in 2009 that works with others to achieve the three goals of Alberta’s Water for Life strategy including safe, secure drinking water supplies; healthy aquatic ecosystems; and reliable, quality supplies for a sustainable economy. A major role of the AWC is to communicate watershed science throughout the Athabasca watershed. This includes both in-person presentations and online content shared through a website, blog posts, newsletters and social media. The AWC often engages summer students and interns to undertake this work as ambassadors for the watershed. Students not only gain valuable professional and career development skills, but are an integral member of the AWC team, bringing their own unique skill sets to help grow our organization and community.
The Position: Seasonal Watershed Education & Outreach Coordinator
Term: Up to 12 weeks between June 1 and August 31 (with the possibility of extension if funding is available).
Location: AWC office in the Town of Athabasca (remote working may be considered); some travel will be required
Hours: 7.25 hours per day (generally 5 days per week but some evening, weekends may be required)
Duties to include:
- promoting the AWC by using your creative talents to assist with branding and marketing activities and developing promotional materials;
- developing watershed science educational content materials suitable for a variety of audiences and using a variety of communications tools (blogs, newsletters, story maps, social media campaigns, videos, etc.);
- delivering educational programming to youth, the public, community stewardship groups and Indigenous communities in the Athabasca area. This might include talking to the public while manning a booth at a trade show, giving a presentation to a lake stewardship group at their annual general meeting, engaging youth in water quality monitoring, or helping volunteers at a shoreline restoration site.
- Assisting with shoreline plantings and other events
- Contributing stories and pictures to use in our outreach materials such as newsletters and social media
- Various duties within an office or field setting
The successful candidate will learn project management, be supported by a team with diverse talents and backgrounds, and be mentored by more experienced staff.
